I'm a medical transcriptionist and am trying to decide if I need to buy specialist medical spellchecker software or whether autocorrect will be enough? The spelling checker and AutoCorrect are two separate features of Word, and you should be able to use both of them together to improve your speed and accuracy.
Add a medical dictionary file to the spelling checker. This will signal you when you type a complete word that isn't present in either the standard Office-supplied dictionary or the medical dictionary. If you're sure that a flagged term is correctly spelled, you can add it to your "custom dictionary" a third file so it won't be tagged again.
Both sites give instructions for installing the file. Note that the instructions for Word are also applicable to Word AutoCorrect has a different function: You can specify a short "abbreviation" for a long word or multiple-word term. When you type the abbreviation in a document and press the spacebar or a punctuation mark, Word replaces the abbreviation with the longer term. Bonus suggestion: You can download the AutoCorrect Open the template and follow the instructions to make a backup document containing your AutoCorrect entries, which you can later restore if something goes bang.
